‘Under the Bridge’ book launch – supporting homeless youth in Melbourne
While on my travels, I stumbled on a book launch for a great cause – to raise money for the homeless youth of Melbourne. This project is really in-line with what I am trying to achieve on my Road to Happiness mission, so I thought I would share the love by mentioning the book to my followers. Here is a summary of what it’s all about…
Cheers, Ivo
Sheree, a young woman who had experienced extended homelessness, stood confidently in front of those gathered for the Under the Bridge book launch, MCed by comedian Glynn Nicholas at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre in early October. As she spoke, she shared with the audience her story from the streets. Sheree, spoke of her struggle when she first moved to Melbourne and the respect she has for the Steps workers she met at Flinders Street Station. Her poem about hope and our need to stand up for justice, included in the book, characterised the evening, where over 150 gathered to celebrate the publication which gives a voice to those living on the streets.
Concern Australia was honoured by the attendance of Minister Bill Shorten MP and his wife Chloe. The Minister spoke with passion about the issue of homelessness and the work of Steps, before officially launching the book entitled: ‘Under the Bridge- Voices from the Street’ to great applause.
The publication is the result of a partnership with the Rotary Club of Southbank and contributions from many in the business community. It combines poetry from those who have experienced homelessness with images by Melbourne high school students and Casamento Photography around the themes of despair and hope. Grace Donohoe, from the Academy of Mary Immaculate, took out the first prize in the photographic competition for her contribution to the book entitled ‘You may be in despair’. All students received prizes from contributing partner Officeworks.
Copies of Under the Bridge -Voices from the Street, are available here or by calling 1300 796 234. Why not order this special gift for your loved ones this Christmas and help provide hope for those who are in despair?
